Origin, classification and history

Origin: Germany.
F.C.I classification: Group 5 - spitz and primitive type dogs.

German Spitz are very old dogs. They are the direct descendants of the "Canis familiaris palustris rutimeyer", who lived in the peat bogs at the Stone Age and by the Spitz who already existed at the time of the stilt houses. The German names of the different varieties are: Wolfspitz (Giant), Grossspizt (Large), Deutscher Mittelspitz (Medium), Kleinspitz (Small) and Zwergspitz (Nano).

General aspect

All German spitz are characterized by smooth and soft fur; rich in undercoat. They have a tight collar around the head and a thick plume on the tail. Hair needs attention and care, especially for show subjects.

Character

They are very affectionate and very loving dogs with their owner. Cheerful and jovial dogs, but rather reserved with strangers. These are mainly pet dogs, and the larger varieties have a strong attitude towards guarding. Being very intelligent, they are easily trainable. They are excellent companions for children. They are dogs that tend to gain weight with extreme ease, therefore, the person who cares for them, must always be careful about feeding. They are very robust dogs. The smaller size Spitz are "apartment dogs", but the larger ones can very well live in the garden.
